Luigi Malagò is a Research Scientist at the Romanian Institute of Science and Technology - RIST, Cluj-Napoca, Romania, since October 2016. Previously, he was Assistant Professor at Shinshu University in Nagano, Japan (2014-16); Research Assistant at Collegio Carlo Alberto, Moncalieri, Italy (05-06/2014 and 06-07/2016); and a Postdoc Researcher at Universita' degli Studi di Milano, Italy (2012-14). He obtained a Bachelor and a Master cum Laude in Computer Science Engineering at Politecnico di Milano (2004, 2007) and the Diploma of Alta Scuola Politecnica (2006). In 2012 he received a PhD in Information Technology at Politecnico di Milano. His work has been awarded with the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award for the best PhD thesis (2012). His research interests mainly focus on Machine Learning and in particular on first and second-order optimization methods over statistical manifold. His research aims at the design and analysis of stochastic optimization algorithms, both in discrete and continuous domains. In 2016 he received a 4-years starting grant as Principal Investigator within the framework of the POC 2014-2020 - ANCSI Competitiveness Operational Programme, Romania, to lead the research project DeepRiemann - Riemannian Optimization Methods for Deep Learning.
